GRANDVIEW — The Lady Zebras went 24-7 last year before losing to Howe in the Class 3A area playoffs. While most teams have to rebuild or at least retool coming off a 24-win season, Grandview is not one of those teams.
The Lady Zebras didn’t have lose any players off last year’s squad as Grandview returns 12 lettermen and nine starters.
Juniors Allie and Brooke Prewitt have the left infield covered at third base and shortstop respectively. The twin sisters have already committed to Arkansas Tech. Allie Prewitt was last year’s all-district and All-Johnson County defensive MVP as she also boasted a .469 batting average. Brooke Prewitt hit .412 with 19 RBIs and 32 runs scored.
Junior center fielder Alexis Galvan was a first-team all-district and second-team all-county selection last year as she hit .393 with 31 RBIs and 38 runs scored. Galvan is verbally committed to Mary Hardin-Baylor.
Sophomore catcher Katie Roberts was the all-district and all-county catcher of the year last season. She hit an impressive .558 last year with four homers, 37 RBIs and 32 runs scored.
Other key returners include senior left fielder Jobie Reeves (.390, 23 RBIs), sophomore pitcher/first baseman Kami Flores (.385, 32 RBIs), sophomore right fielder Emily Little (.400, 19 RBIs) and sophomore pitcher/infielder Kylee Flores.
In addition, the Lady Zebras received a big boost by move-in Brooke Blackwell, who was the All-Johnson County pitcher of the year as a freshman for Joshua in 2015 and has already verbally committed to Texas Tech University.
In addition to the Prewitt sisters, Galvan and Blackwell already having committed to the next level, Grandview Coach Ron Holton said the Flores twins and Roberts have also already been heavily pursued by college programs.
Needless to say, the Lady Zebras are loaded with talent. Turning that talent into wins and a deep playoff run will be the key.
Holton said he scheduled a tough non-district and tournament schedule in order to be prepared for district play and what they hope is a lengthy playoff run.
“Our team strengths include defensive fundamentals and offensive aggressiveness,” Holton said. “The key to our success is coming together as a team and working hard each day.”
Grandview finished second in district play last season behind Brock, but after realignment the Lady Zebras are considered strong favorites to take the District 17-3A title.
Grandview opens the season Thursday against Tomball at the College Station Tournament.
